What is Cache Memory In Computer ?

Cache Memory Don't Forget
Cache Memory Don't Forget

What is Cache Memory ? Every student of Computer department having some doubts on this word. Some are having doubts how we will pronounce the word 'Cache'. As a brief description you can say, Cache is a small memory, but with a greater speed to access than main memory. The data stored in cache can be accessed faster thus by increasing the speed.

# How Cache memory Works ?

Cache is a word derived from French language. It can be pronounced as "Cash". Cache memory is actually a physical memory built into CPU and can be used to increase the overall speed. CPU uses cache memory to store most used instructions that are needed to run several processes. If Cache (Built in) is in action, CPU does not need motherboard's system bus to transfer data. That maybe the one reason to increase the speed. A new process to get start, it need some resources, so cache will provide the resources that is stored in it. So programs also can run it quicker.

# Features Of Cache

Cache is built in feature of a CPU, which is doing process at a speed as a microprocessor. We can add more cache, but it is having only less speed than built in cache. But it can be twice faster than normal Random Access Memory (RAM). Cache is expensive than Random Access Memory (RAM). There is limit to add number of cache in a CPU.

# Levels Of Cache Memory

As Cache memory is providing as much speed as a microprocessor, and is providing some more speed than a Random Access Memory (RAM). Do you know before that Cache is this much important to the system's total speed. A few hours back i even don't know about "how a cache is working inside CPU".

Cache is classified to some layers, according to the speed of it and the availability of cache inside a Computer. Built in Cache is named as "L1 Cache", as it is faster than any-other cache in a particular computer. Earlier computer got only one cache. Modern computer is having L1 and L2 caches some of them even have L3 cache. Most of the modern users is buying cache than RAM even-though cache is expensive. Who knows, by next few years we might have default 4-5 Caches in a Personal Computer.

Now we have discussed about hardware caches, there are software caches also. Hope you have got some small idea about what a computer cache is ? if you have some doubts on this topic please share it as a comment. If you find any wrong information on this article please feel free to tell me.

Thanks to my Professor Mr. Binu to remind me about thinking of computer memories and thanks to geek.
